The Chingari Rehabilitation Centre has taken upon itself the responsibility of providing medical relief and rehabilitating congenitally disabled children born to families affected by the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the subsequent water contamination.

The Chingari Rehabilitation Centre has taken upon itself the responsibility of providing medical relief and rehabilitating congenitally disabled children born to families affected by the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the subsequent water contamination.

The Centre caters to hundreds of children who receive Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Special Education and other facilities, free of cost.

Physiotherapy

Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, delayed milestones and muscular dystrophy are common, even among the third or fourth generation of Bhopal Gas survivors. The centre provides physiotherapy to children who face issues like balancing and coordination, and inability to sit, stand or walk.

  • There are 7 Physiotherapists providing physiotherapy to two hundred children daily
  • 45 children have learned to walk
  • 40 children who were initially not even able to sit on their own are now able to stand without support and walk with assistance
  • 70 children are now able to support their own necks

Speech Therapy

The Centre’s speech therapy team helps children who suffer from issues like poor or no speech, poor eye contact, chewing problems, drooling issues, limited tongue flexibility and poor comprehension.

There are 6 Speech Therapists looking after 210 children

  • Drooling has been cured in 76 children
  • 86 children can now maintain eye contact
  • 47 children have started speaking phrases
  • 34 children can now talk in sentences
  • 30 children can now tell small stories

Special Education

Special Education helps in the social, personal, academic, recreational and occupational development of children with special needs.

  • There are 5 Special Educators and 1 Assistant providing Special Education to 240 children
  • 40 children can now write alphabets in Hindi and English, numbers and their own names
  • 25 children can now add and subtract and write the names of their family members
  • 15 severely disabled children have started doing simpler activities, like working with blocks
  • 46 children now attend a mainstream school

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps children with Sensory Integration Disorders and Autism. The occupational team helps children to communicate, follow instruction and develop social skills.

  • At present 40 children are receiving this therapy at the centre
  • Among them behavioural issues have reduced in 23 children
  • 19 children are able to carry out daily tasks, such as washing and cleaning

We believe Dow must finally accept responsibility for Bhopal.

Until then, The Bhopal Medical Appeal funds two award-winning clinics in the city. Both offer free, first-class care to victims of the gas disaster or the ongoing water contamination. The survivors have nowhere else left to turn.
